2011 celebrates its 60th German Oceanographic Museum Birthday. Founded in 1951, it is today with its four sites to the most important and most visited museums in Germany. The youngest of the four houses - that opened in 2008 in Stralsund OZEANEUM - became "Europe's Museum of the Year 2010" award. The German Oceanographic Museum is for visitors and scientists always been a place of discovery. On what have done in the past 60 years and built up, we can be in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern really proud of. For over twelve million items and tens of thousands of animals, the German Oceanographic Museum has selected 365 discoveries, their stories are unique and illustrate milestones in the Center. These include many exhibits that have been shown in museums yet.

The German Oceanographic Museum is actually four museums:
>>> MEERESMUESUM in Stralsund's old town in the former Dominican monastery of St. Catherine's Here. Oceanographic exhibitions and aquariums of tropical and Mediterranean houses.
>>> OZEANEUM to Stralsund Harbour Island. Here you can experience a unique journey across Europe through the underwater world of the northern seas.
>>> NAUTINEUM on the small island in Dänholm Strelasund. The great outdoors as the numerous exhibits of fisheries, oceanography and hydrography.
>>> NATUREUM about five kilometers west of Prerow on the Darß with three tanks with about 20 000 liters of salt water that are home to marine life from the Baltic.
