cinema. Daniel Simon was born in 1975 in Stralsund to the world. The vehicle design was for the fleet of science-fiction spectacle "TRON: Legacy" responsible, in place since yesterday in the German cinemas. Andrew Wesche spoke with Daniel Simon.

When were your special talents obvious?
I was three years old like to draw. I have painted cars and ships. My parents have worked at the shipyard, which was a big influence. I never had a particular professional presentation, I have always done what brought me pleasure. And there is one out to another - from studying at the College of Design in Pforzheim, where I studied automotive design, through my work at VW in Spain to Hollywood. It required hard work and needed a lot of patience. But it worked.

How did you come into it in the film industry?
I have worked for Bugatti, which was a dream. I would have a career and get a company car and a pension plan, but that was boring to me somehow. Life is pretty short. I then published a book with designs, among others showed how it could look like, I would make a Hollywood movie. Joseph Kosinski, the director of "Tron: Legacy", has found my book in a bookstore and wrote me an email. That was 2008th

Can you reference to "TRON" briefly explain how your job looks like?
all designers in Hollywood are independent. You get only a desk and chair, I let me send over my computer from Berlin. The first day we read the script, then come the director and the chief designer and say we should start with the bike, then in two weeks with the Aircraft continue and in five weeks with the car.

Everything is very precisely timed. Then I sit down with a pen and a sheet of paper and stick from the first ideas. There are simple things: Is it more rounded or more angular? Is it open or closed? How many seats are there? After a week I'm starting to work with my high-tech computer. I design in 3D. When the director comes over, I can design it for my "run around". He then says that I must still do something. To the director with the ten or twelve vehicles is happy and Disney and the toy maker also, it takes about a year.

Fertilize in Hollywood and the auto industry against each other?
But the Hollywood stuff are spun into. It is about pure entertainment. One should wake up after two hours from a dream. Like a rock concert should be a bit distracted and have fun. So I go to "TRON" approach. For a car company I work a lot more serious. If I work for Honda in Japan to the city car of the future, then it comes to environmental friendliness, lightweight construction, recycling opportunities.

distinguished addition to cars and shooting you also like women?
One can look back decades and you will see that it is this connection always there. Why this is so, I can not describe. I use it for me and it's great fun. In "TRON" it is no different. How did the beautiful "Sirens" and Olivia Wilde, which was also very sexy looks. I have tailored all actors on the vehicle's body. In the film world, there is no seat adjustment. The actors are scanned, and their digital versions, I worked on the screen.

If you have a German today still trust advance when it comes to cars?
Yes. In Hollywood they have a close look at what I bring to a knowledge. Then they rely very much on me, that's why I was hired. I thought that was pretty cool. I have made for the film nothing else than what I'm doing for 15 years. They sometimes amazed how quickly you can solve problems with good old engineering knowledge.

What about your life today?

I live in Santa Monica. First, I moved to Hollywood, because I wanted to give at home with it. After three days I have been looking into the distance, because Hollywood is just plain ugly and also have it no one there. I live on the west coast and work every day. I call it does not work. Los Angeles is a city very fast. I have little privacy, and if so, It has to do with the film world.
